Description
A custom made Ankle Foot Orthosis (A.F.O.) is designed to maximise the available use of the ankle-foot complex. Corrective three-point pressure forces are applied to maintain the calcaneus in the most neutral, functional position. With more cosmetic appeal than calipers, the orthosis fits into shoes and may be hidden by clothing.

A customised cast is taken of the leg and foot into a corrected alignment, or into the most functional position as with rigid deformities.

The cast is then filled and modified to achieve the best fit. High temperature plastic is vacuum formed over the cast. This plastic (polypropylene) is then trimmed to suit the client’s requirements and straps attached.

Description
These types of orthoses have similar function to the plastic ankle-foot orthosis. They consist of metal uprights on either, or both sides of the leg which attach to the shoe through a square or rounded “ferrule”. Ankle movement can be restricted for stability purposes or springs and can assist with weak musculature as with foot drop (weak dorsiflexors). Additions such as T-straps allow the ankle to be controlled in valgus / varus.

Description
An easily removed custom made light weight plastic splint to encompass the whole leg and foot. Stabilises the ankle in both medio-lateral and frontal planes. A patella tendon weight-bearing model will reduce the amount of forces through the leg to aid in the healing of bones and foot trauma. Front shell immobilises tibia and fibula fractures.


AF8 - Bed Resting Splint

Description
A soft foam boot and supportive splint. Maintains foot / ankle position and limits hip rotation whilst in bed.


Ankle Oedema

For control of swelling a large range of specialised garments has been developed to aid the best recovery outcomes. Graduated compression stockings have become a popular development in control of chronic swelling and varicose veins. Anti-embolism stockings are now used as a part of the post-operative recovery regimes of many hospitals. The application of compression to a limb increases venous and lymphatic drainage to control oedema. Many lymphodema sufferers have now found relief from wearing graduated compression garments.
